Historiographical works, letters, terms from several languages, distant geographies, testimonial narratives, a wide sociological, anthropological and literary bibliography: everything is remade and transformed into this novel. On the other side, translation as a vital function becomes a subject of the story itself. Characters spent their lives in the attempt of translating the unknown into known, and translating themselves for others’eyes. Their fate depends on their success. Those who suffer the more (or die), are those incapable or not willing to translate, those who don’t find the key of the equivalences needed to remake themselves in other place. It is not possible to know thoroughly one’s own world if you have not seen the other world, the whole community of human beings, in what they share, and in what they differ. Human journey means to go and return, although you may not return in the flesh. Babel is not hell, because human languages can interprete and interpenetrate each other, just as bodies do; because the communicant vessels of translation do exist. Escribir es traducir, y en Finisterre esta condición de la escritura se halla especialmente marcada. Lecturas historiográficas, cartas, testimonios, voces de varias lenguas, geografías distantes, una vasta bibliografía antropológica, sociológica, literaria: todo se reelabora y se transforma en la novela. Por otra parte, la traducción como operación vital se tematiza en la historia: los personajes se pasan la vida intentando traducir la realidad desconocida a lo conocido, y en traducirse a sí mismos para otros ojos. En el éxito de ese proceso se juega su destino. Sufren más (o mueren) los que no quieren ni pueden traducir; los que no encuentran la clave de las “equivalencias” necesarias para rehacerse en otro sitio. No es posible tener conocimiento de lo propio sin haber visto lo otro: la totalidad, la comunidad de los seres humanos, en lo que éstos comparten y en lo que difieren. El viaje es de ida y vuelta, aunque no se retorne físicamente. Babel no es el infierno porque las lenguas se interpretan y se interpenetran como los cuerpos; porque existen los vasos comunicantes de la traducción.
