In some of his writings, Cotler explicitly referred to the relationship between democracy and social cohesion, but this concern also appeared in a more diffuse way in almost all his life work. Exploring Cotler’s role as a key intellectual in the Peru of the second half of the 20th century, this article focuses on three issues deeply embedded in his work: the historical argumentation, the indigenous question and the democracy. Inspired by R. Koselleck, U. Eco and P. Bourdieu, it examines some Cotler’s illustrating works and key arguments within the context of his broad intellectual production.

Este artículo analiza la relación que las nociones de democracia y cohesión social han tenido con la trayectoria intelectual de Julio Cotler. Se defiende que los conceptos socio-políticos son producidos y puestos en circulación por los campos intelectuales de las sociedades concreta, con el nivel polémico y la sedimentación social que esos campos conllevan. Julio Cotler se refirió a la relación entre democracia y cohesión social en alguna de sus obras en forma explícita y en otras, casi todas, de manera más difusa. Se analiza su papel como intelectual clave en la segunda mitad del siglo XX peruano, y tres asuntos que hilvanan su producción sobre Perú: la argumentación histórica, la cuestión indígena y la democracia. Desde una perspectiva que une a R. Koselleck, U. Eco y P. Bourdieu, y sin pretender un estudio compilatorio, el análisis recae en algunos textos y argumentos ejemplares de Cotler.
