In 2010, a group of human rights defense entities requested the preservation of buildings as cultural heritage of the state of São Paulo. The article aims to discuss the process that led to the preservation of the set of buildings, addressing the research methods, the theoretical discussions and the conflicts present in this emblematic case. O DOI-CODI, em São Paulo (Brasil) foi um órgão de repressão que funcionou entre 1969 e 1983 e tinha como principal objetivo a perseguição a opositores da Ditadura Civil-Militar (1964-1985). Em 2010, um grupo de entidades de defesa dos Direitos Humanos solicitou a preservação dos prédios como patrimônio cultural do estado de São Paulo.
