It was severely attacked and repressed. Violence by the Peronist government was extended with special bitterness toward leftists. This attack involved from the expulsion of those from their positions in the unions, to imprisonment, kidnapping, torture, and murder of Antonio Aguirre, member of the Communist Party and member of the union of waiters in the province. This paper examines the circumstances in which the crime occurred, crucial for a proper understanding of the politics of the populist regime in connection with the labor and trade union movement. En 1949 se desarrolló en Argentina, con epicentro en Tucumán, la huelga azucarera más grande de su historia. La misma fue duramente atacada y reprimida. La violencia ejercida por el gobierno peronista se extendió con particular encono hacia militantes de izquierda. Este ataque implicó desde la expulsión de aquellos de sus cargos en los sindicatos, hasta encarcelamientos, secuestros, torturas, y el asesinato de Antonio Aguirre, afiliado al Partido Comunista y miembro del sindicato de mozos de la provincia. El presente trabajo examina las circunstancias en que se produjo dicho crimen, decisivas para una adecuada comprensión de la política del régimen populista local en relación con el movimiento obrero y sindical.
