The present article aims to reflect, including from an analysis of the international experience of the ombudsman, how mechanisms of popular participation can serve as good instruments of social control, contributing greatly to the improvement of public policies aiming the common good.

The present article aims to reflect, including from an analysis of the international experience of the ombudsman, how mechanisms of popular participation can serve as good instruments of social control, contributing greatly to the improvement of public policies aiming the common good. Com o passar dos anos, sobretudo com o advento das novas tecnologias da informação, que propiciaram novos mecanismos de acesso à informação e transparência, cada vez mais há de se pensar o controle de políticas públicas para além dos métodos convencionais, passando a voltar os olhos ao controle social, realizado propriamente pelos administrados. O presente artigo visa refletir, inclusive a partir de uma análise da experiência internacional do ombudsman (ouvidorias), como mecanismos de participação popular podem servir como bons instrumentos de controle social, contribuindo sobremaneira para a melhora das políticas públicas visando o bem comum.
