The normal wear and tear of animal life causes histologic changes in many organs and those are called background lesions. Many animal models are recognized to have background lesions for which distinction from xenobiotic-induced injury may be challenging. Hemoglobin crystals are background lesions occasionally seen in rats, because rat hemoglobin crystallizes more readily than does hemoglobin in other species. We report herein three cases of hemoglobin crystals found in lung from untreated Wistar/Cmedc rats from Center for Comparative Medicine (CMC). Diagnosis was confirmed by histopathology. Hemoglobin crystals were found typically in the alveolar extracellular space, they were rectangular and red, and usually spatially associated with extravasated erythrocytes. The aim of recognition of expected background lesions in strains of rats is maximize the reliability and reproducibility of results to translational research in preclinical studies. This report provides a valuable information and present the hemoglobin crystals like a background lesions found in lungs of Wistar/Cmedc rats from CMC. Los animales de laboratorio, como los ratones y las ratas, se han utilizado durante mucho tiempo como modelos para mejorar nuestra comprensión de varias enfermedades y tratamientos. El transcurso normal de la vida de los animales provoca cambios histológicos en muchos órganos y estos se denominan lesiones de fondo o “background”. Se reconoce que muchos modelos animales tienen estas lesiones que pueden ser difícil de diferenciar de las lesiones inducidas por xenobióticos. Los cristales de hemoglobina son lesiones “background” que se observan ocasionalmente en ratas debido a que la hemoglobina de la rata cristaliza más fácilmente que la hemoglobina de otras especies. Reportamos aquí tres casos de cristales de hemoglobina encontrados en pulmones de ratas Wistar/Cmedc del Centro de Medicina Comparada (CMC) que no recibieron ningún tipo de tratamiento. El diagnóstico fue confirmado por histopatología. Los cristales de hemoglobina se encontraron típicamente en el espacio extracelular alveolar, fueron rectangulares y rojos, y generalmente estaban asociados espacialmente con eritrocitos extravasados. El objetivo del reconocimiento de las lesiones “background” en los animales de laboratorio es maximizar la confiabilidad y reproducibilidad de los resultados para la investigación traslacional en estudios preclínicos. Este informe proporciona información valiosa que presenta a los cristales de hemoglobina como lesiones “background” que se pueden encontrar en los pulmones de las ratas Wistar/Cmedc de CMC.
