Adult male cats (n=19) aged 2-5 years belonging to the reproductive colony of Cátedra de Reproducción Animal, FCV, UNLP were used. Tomcats were maintained under a controlled artificial illumination schedule to preserve sperm production but were exposed to natural environmental temperature and humidity for 18 months. Data related to daily temperature and humidity were supplied by the Department of Seismology and Meteorological Information, FCAG, UNLP. Considering the temperature requirements for the welfare of cats and sampling day temperature, ejaculates were divided into 3 groups; G1) ambient temperature >25ºC; G2) 20-22ºC; and G3) <17ºC. Results showed a significant decreased in sperm quality comparing G1 with G2 and G3. Ambient temperatures above 25ºC mainly affected concentration and total sperm quantity, showing reductions of 69 and 64% respectively. While, motility, velocity, volume, and sperm morphology decreased about 18-25%. This study provides novel information on the relationship between sperm production and environmental temperature in the domestic cat. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el efecto de la temperatura ambiental sobre la producción espermática en gatos. Se utilizaron 19 gatos mestizos adultos (2-5 años) pertenecientes a la colonia reproductiva de la Cátedra de Reproducción Animal, FCV, UNLP. Los gatos permanecieron con un régimen de luz artificial (ciclos alternos) con temperatura y humedad relativa ambiente natural. Estos últimos datos fueron suministrados por el Departamento de Sismología e Información Meteorológica, FCAG, UNLP. Considerando los requerimientos de temperatura para el bienestar de gatos y el momento de la toma de muestra, los eyaculados se dividieron en: G1) temperatura ambiente >25ºC; G2) 20 a 22ºC, y G3) <17ºC. Los resultados muestran una disminución significativa en todos los parámetros seminales evaluados al comparar G1 con G2 y G3. La temperatura ambiente elevada afectó principalmente la concentración y la cantidad de espermatozoides totales, evidenciando una reducción del 69 y 64% respectivamente. Mientras que la motilidad, el vigor, el volumen y la morfología espermática mostraron descensos del 18 al 25%. Este trabajo brinda información innovadora sobre la relación existente entre producción espermática y temperatura ambiental en el gato doméstico.
