Transmission usually occurs via the fecal-oral route and Salmonella dublin is the most common serotype isolated in bovines. Although several studies have examined the prevalence of fecal Salmonella shedding on dairy farms, there is very little information available regarding the occurrence of clinical disease associated with Salmonella infections in cattle. We report herein an outbreak of Salmonellosis in dairy cows from Santa Fe, Argentina. The diagnosis was confirmed by gross and microscopic changes combined with aerobic culture. Animals showed a clinical history of diarrhea, fever, anorexia, dehydration and death. The gross and histologic lesions were a necrotizing hepatitis, lymphadenitis and splenitis with characteristic paratyphoid nodules, fibrinous cholecystitis and a necrotizing enteritis. The possible predisposing factors in these cases were mycotoxins present in the feed and the presence of backyard poultry and pigs in the farm. La salmonelosis es una enfermedad infecciosa asociada con enteritis, septicemia y pérdidas reproductivas en vacas lecheras. La transmisión suele ocurrir por vía fecal-oral y Salmonella dublin es el serotipo más común aislado en bovinos. Aunque varios estudios han evaluado la prevalencia y la diseminación fecal de Salmonella en rodeos lecheros, existe muy poca información disponible sobre la aparición de enfermedades clínicas asociadas con las infecciones por Salmonella en el ganado adulto. Reportamos aquí un brote de Salmonelosis en vacas lecheras en Santa Fe, Argentina. El diagnóstico se confirmó mediante la observación de lesiones macroscópicas y microscópicas compatibles y el cultivo aeróbico de la bacteria. Los animales presentaban antecedentes clínicos de diarrea, fiebre, anorexia, deshidratación y muerte. Las lesiones macroscópicas e histopatológicas fueron hepatitis, linfoadenitis y esplenitis necrotizante con característicos nódulos paratifosos, colecistitis fibrinosa y enteritis necrotizante. Los posibles factores predisponentes en estos casos fueron las micotoxinas presentes en el alimento y la presencia de aves y cerdos como crianza de traspatio en la explotación.
