description There are few studies on the occurrence and prevalence of subclinical endometrial disorders in cats. The objective was to carry out a cytological, histological, and morphometric study of the normal feline endometrium. Mixed-breed female cats were studied, in which vaginal cytology, blood, endometrial cytology, and biopsies were taken from both uterine horns. The cats were divided into three groups (G) according to the phase of the estrous cycle. G Inactive (GI, n = 7), G follicular (GF, n = 2) and G luteal (GL, n = 1). The histological study showed normal endometrium (EN, n = 8; 7 GI and 1 GF), endometritis (n = 1, GF), cystic endometrial hyperplasia (n = 1; GL). The serum concentrations of E2 and P4 in GI, GF and GL were: E2 10.30 ± 0.25, 12 and 10 pg / mL and P4 0.58 ± 0.10, 0.31 and 9 ng / mL respectively. In the endometrial cytological study of the normal endometrium (EN), a PMN percentage of 16.04 ± 2.87 was recorded. The study of uterine biopsies in EN showed longitudinal folds of the mucosa, intact endometrial epithelium firmly adhered to the basement membrane, and stromal tissue with little infiltration of leukocytes (0 to 3) per field and endometrial glands with secretory activity. The EN showed an endometrial thickness of 472.83 ± 99.05 μm and a glandular cell height of 15.10 ± 4.93 μm. There were no differences between the uterine horns. Knowledge of the histological, cytological, and morphometric characteristics in feline normal endometrium will improve the diagnostic approach of subclinical endometrial affections.

Existen escasos estudios sobre la ocurrencia y prevalencia de afecciones endometriales subclínicas en gatas. El objetivo fue realizar un estudio citológico, histológico y morfométrico del endometrio normal felino. Se estudiaron gatas mestizas, en las cuales se tomaron muestras de citología vaginal, sangre, citología endometrial y biopsias de ambos cuernos uterinos. Las gatas se dividieron en tres grupos (G) según la fase del ciclo estral. G Inactiva (GI, n = 7), G folicular (GF, n = 2) y G lútea (GL, n = 1). El estudio histológico mostró endometrio normal (EN, n = 8; 7 GI y 1 GF), endometritis (n = 1, GF), hiperplasia quística de endometrio (n = 1; GL). Las concentraciones séricas de E2 y P4 en GI, GF y GL fueron: E2 10.30 ± 0.25, 12 y 10 pg / mL y P4 0.58 ± 0.10, 0.31 y 9 ng / mL respectivamente. En el estudio citológico endometrial del endometrio normal se registró un porcentaje de PMN de 16,04 ± 2,87. El estudio de las biopsias uterinas, en EN mostró pliegues longitudinales de la mucosa, epitelio endometrial intacto firmemente adherido a la membrana basal, tejido estromal con escasa infiltración de leucocitos (0 a 3 leucocitos por campo) y glándulas endometriales con actividad secretora. En el EN se registró un grosor endometrial de 472,83 ± 99,05 μm y una altura de las células glandulares de y 15,10 ± 4,93 μm. No hubo diferencias entre los cuernos uterinos. El conocimiento de las características histológicas, citológicas y morfométricas del endometrio felino normal permitirá mejorar la aproximación diagnóstica de las afecciones subclínicas del endometrio.
