Con Estructura social y anomia, Merton da un paso enorme en el camino de la teoría general sobre la conducta desviada. Entre las tareas que aún quedan pendientes podemos enumerar: explicar con mayor claridad las formas en que las experiencias y la adaptación de Alter («otro») afectan la tensión de Ego («yo») y sus posibles soluciones; integrar mejor el hecho de que las conductas desviadas se desarrollan dentro de un proceso de interacción; explorar nuevas formas de conceptualizar este proceso de interacción; e integrar la teoría de la anomia y la teoría de roles de Mead.
