Esta especie, en el pasado, sufrió una drástica disminución poblacional debido principalmente a dos factores: i- la caza indiscriminada, para la utilización de sus productos, y ii- la expansión agrícola, con la consecuente fragmentación de su hábitat. Es escasa la información de esta especie a nivel genético-poblacional, como así también es escaso el conocimiento de su sistema de apareamiento. Por estos motivos, los objetivos de esta Tesis Doctoral fueron: a) Analizar la estructura y variabilidad genética y fenotípica existente en poblaciones silvestres de C. yacare de Argentina; b) Caracterizar el sistema de apareamiento de esta especie autóctona como aporte al conocimiento de su biología reproductiva. Para estudiar el objetivo a), en el análisis genético poblacional se utilizaron marcadores microsatélites (SSR) y el gen del citocromo B (CytB). Para definir la variabilidad fenotípica, se obtuvieron imágenes digitales de la región cefálica, que fueron evaluadas mediante morfometría geométrica (MG). Los resultados indican que la población analizada de C. yacaré tiene valores intermedios a altos en cuanto a variabilidad genética, y presenta valores significativos de estructura poblacional tanto con los marcadores SSR como con el gen CytB. Utilizando herramientas de MG, se observó una estructura fenotípica para la forma de la región cefálica. Para el objetivo b), se tomaron muestras de sangre de 13 nidos de C. yacare. En 6 de esos nidos se encontró más de un padre para las crías. Estos resultados indican un sistema de apareamiento de paternidad múltiple. The Caiman yacare is one of the two crocodilian species present in Argentina. This species has formerly experienced a very sharp numerical decrease of their population due to two main factors: i- the indiscriminate hunting for intended animal-based product use, and ii- the habitat destruction and fragmentation resulting from agricultural expansion. There’s very limited information on the population genetic study of this species, as well as little knowledge of their mating system. On those grounds, the aims of this thesis were: a) to analyze the structure and genetic and phenotypic variability existing in wild populations of C. yacare in Argentina; b) to define the mating system of this native species as a contribution to the knowledge of its reproductive biology. To know into aim a), in the population genetic analysis, microsatellite markers (SSR) were used and cytochrome B gene (CytB). To define the phenotypic variability, digital images of the cephalic region were obtained, were assessed using geometric morphometrics (GM). The results indicate that the population analyzed of C. yacare has intermediate to high values as regards to genetic variability, and it presents significant values of population structure with both the SSR markers and the CytB gene. Using GM tools, a phenotypic structure was observed for the shape of the cephalic region. To look at aim b), blood samples were taken from of 13 nests of C. yacare. In 6 of those nests more than one father was found for the offspring. These results indicate a multiple paternity mating system.
