Este trabajo describe el trayecto histórico de las bibliotecas públicas de la ciudad de Rafaela, Santa Fe (Argentina) y el aporte social y cultural que han realizado a través de los diferentes servicios y acciones que han llevado adelante. Se trata de una investigación cualitativa con un diseño no experimental descriptivo, para el que se recolectaron, evaluaron y sintetizaron datos de fuentes primarias y secundarias, utilizando la investigación bibliográfica o documental y la entrevista como recursos principales de indagación. Como conclusión principal sostenemos que las bibliotecas públicas de Rafaela son una fuente de riqueza cultural y forman parte del patrimonio histórico de la ciudad. Si bien los inicios de cada una trazaron un camino diferente en cuanto a su historia, marcado por quienes las crearon, todas surgieron por iniciativa de un grupo de ciudadanos que comprendieron que un espacio literario, educativo y cultural era necesario para el engrandecimiento de la población. Y así lo plasmaron a lo largo de su historia. Con actividades que reflejan que las bibliotecas son una puerta abierta a un espacio donde se vive la diversidad en todo sentido, donde las posibilidades están dadas tanto para el chico de la calle que pasa como para el señor de traje que entra a leer el diario todos los días. La biblioteca pública significa integración y creatividad. This work describes the historical trajectory of the public libraries of the city of Rafaela and the social and cultural contribution that they have made through the different services and actions that they have carried out. It is a qualitative research with a descriptive non-experimental design, for which data from primary and secondary sources were collected, evaluated and synthesized, using bibliographic or documentary research and interviews as the main resources of inquiry. As a main conclusion we maintain that the public libraries of Rafaela are a source of cultural wealth and are part of the historical heritage of the city. Although the beginnings of each one traced a different path in terms of their history, marked by those who created them, all arose at the initiative of a group of citizens who understood that a literary, educational and cultural space was necessary for the growth of the population. And that's how they shaped it throughout their history. With activities that reflect that libraries are an open door to a space where diversity is experienced in every sense, where the possibilities are given both for the street boy who passes by and for the man in a suit who enters to read the newspaper all the days.
